Medium size evergreen oak from the warmer parts of China, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong and north of Vietnam. Grows on ridge tops and slopes in mature or primary tropical & subtropical forest at 500-2200m. Leaves narrow and hang down. Growing at Eastwoodhill, none have survived outside in the UK.

Evergreen with colouring foliage in Spring. Thick leathery leaves in wet mountain forests. Timber is soft hence the name poplar oak. (previously called Q. candicans).

Straight trunked, deciduous to semi-evergreen with large leaves. Curious pachydermatous bark. Grows on hill slopes to humid valleys at 1200-2700m asl in Mexican cloud forest.

E USA. Upright, broadly spreading, deciduous. Foliage dark glossy green turning to a brilliant scarlet autumn colour. Less vigorous and shy acorn producer in colder areas.
