Broadly columnar, deciduous. Famous for its quality timber and large size in America. NZ produced 1 year seedlings are still small compared to other oaks. They show signs of producing red autumn colours. Much in demand and rarely available.

Medium size evergreen oak from the warmer parts of China, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong and north of Vietnam. Grows on ridge tops and slopes in mature or primary tropical & subtropical forest at 500-2200m. Leaves narrow and hang down. Growing at Eastwoodhill, none have survived outside in the UK.

Evergreen with colouring foliage in Spring. Thick leathery leaves in wet mountain forests. Timber is soft hence the name poplar oak. (previously called Q. candicans).

Straight trunked, deciduous to semi-evergreen with large leaves. Curious pachydermatous bark. Grows on hill slopes to humid valleys at 1200-2700m asl in Mexican cloud forest.
