S E USA. Broadly conical, deciduous. Small slender trunked tree suited to confined spaces. Prefers moist sites and grows less vigorously on dry sites. Early autumn colour bright red. Special prized honey producer.

East Asia. Tufted grass-like plant, a member of the lily family. Purplish black leaves with small bell shaped pink flowers in summer, followed by glossy black purplish berries. Plant in full sun or light shade, tolerates dry spells.

A compact, upright flax with narrow emerald-green leaves forming a small bushy clump. Much smaller than P. cookianum, so better for use in a home garden. Ideal for border group plantings or in containers. Grows well in most well drained positions. Evergreen. Hardy.
