Broadly spreading, evergreen. Common throughout NZ. Long lived. Tolerates salt laden winds. A good screening plant with its glossy green leaves. Palatable to stock and possums. Cold hardy form from the Lewis Pass.

Pigeonwood is a small native tree that thrives in lowland forests of both North and South Islands. A great small evergreen tree that produces bright red berries that are eaten by the Kereru.

Broadly spreading crown with large bunches of white flowers in autumn. Attractive to many insects including monarch butterfly. Coastal and lowland forest in mild areas.

NW Argentina to Bolivia in humid forests. Very similar in appearance to the Black walnut of the USA, and may have been moved by migrating indigenous people as a food and trade item along the mountains over a very long period. Suited to the mild parts of NZ.
