Broadly spreading, deciduous. Exfoliating bark similar to the London Plane. Small flowers with red stamens on the bare branches in winter. Leaves sometimes edged with purple that turn yellow, orange or red in autumn. Tolerates dry sites.

South & Central Chile in Andean valleys with 2000 to 3000mm rainfall and hot dry summers. Well drained volcanic soils. Dense broadly columnar evergreen crowns with yew-like foliage, female trees produce delicious edible green grape-like fruits ripening to yellow. Related to matai, kereru love them.

Broadly columnar, evergreen. Juvenile divaricating form with scattered thin brown leaves. Adult form develops above with yew-like foliage. Bark falls off in rounded patches. Moist fertile sites. Highly prized hard stable timber. Kereru eat the fruit.
