Native, stiffly erect evergreen. Taller than usual flax, useful for sheltering stock. Seed pods stand erect. Favours wet sites but adaptable. Used for shelter in exposed moist coastal sites.

W Nth America. Narrowly conical, evergreen. Grows from sea coast into moist mountains in Oregon and Washington. Good volume production in Westland, logs lighter, bigger loads on trucks. Increased planting taking place. 2nd largest volume producer in USA behind Sequoia. 2 year old.

Broadly conical when young, develops a broadly arched umbrella shaped evergreen crown. Cones globose, ripen in 3rd year. Large seeds edible. Suited to dry and coastal conditions. Tolerates heat & cold.

Broadly spreading, evergreen. Shiny leaves with dense white or pale buff tomentum on the underside. Tiny dark red scented flowers, followed by green 3cm capsules. Great coastal shelter but not for cold frosty inland districts.
