Slow growing native evergreen conifer found throughout NZ where rainfall is adequate. Female trees produce oval red fruits with soft edible pulp around the single seed. Kereru feast on the fruit and pass the seed in their droppings. The seed is slow to germinate.

E. China. Tall deciduous conifer with whorled branches. 15-30 green umbrella-like spreading needles on the shoot tip, turning orange-yellow in autumn. Growth is slow in NZ, and the tree is winter hardy in the UK. Seed raised, rarely available.

Grows on ridge tops and slopes in mature or primary tropical & subtropical forest at 500-2200m. Leaves narrow and hang down. Growing at Eastwoodhill, none have survived outside in the UK.
