Medium size evergreen oak from the warmer parts of China, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong and north of Vietnam. Grows on ridge tops and slopes in mature or primary tropical & subtropical forest at 500-2200m. Leaves narrow and hang down. Growing at Eastwoodhill, none have survived outside in the UK.

N Africa and S Spain. Broadly spreading, dense crown, semi-evergreen. Dark green leaves. Tolerates exposure, heat and dry conditions. Good acorn production.

Far south of Mexico in cloud forest and in humid oak-pine forest from 750-2700m altitide. Regenerates naturally after shifting cultivation Broadly spreading, evergreen. Medium sized, oblong, un-toothed leaves, gradually turning yellow before spring. Promising growth in NZ.

Mediterranean. Broadly spreading, dense, evergreen crown with dark green leathery leaves. Tolerates heat, drought, exposure & salt spray in coastal areas. Timber hard and durable. Clips for a hedge.
