E. Nth America. Broadly columnar, deciduous. Straight trunk & lightly branched. Bark peels in vertical plates with age. Orange autumn colour, prized timber, nuts sweet & edible. Plant small, tap root must develop before height growth commences.

Broadly conical, evergreen. Drought and exposure tolerant. Popular dry country shelter tree. Mulch to smother grass for best results. Can be damaged by some herbicides. Branch ends droop. Valuable aromatic timber, heartwood with resin. 1 year old.

E. Mediterranean region. Broadly spreading, deciduous. Masses of mauve pea-like flowers in clusters along the old shoots, branches and trunk before the leaves emerge. Very impressive. Tolerates dry sites.

Common bushy straight stemmed native shrub with wide angled branches, bearing clustered pairs of variably shaped small dark green leaves. Fruit pale blue eaten by birds.
