Selected clone with brilliant orange and red autumn colour lasting several weeks, beginning before October Glory. Red Sunset judged the best clone for warmer Southern USA, may be best for milder parts of NZ.

Broadly spreading evergreen in lowland forest needing a mild climate. Shiny compound dark green leaves, woody capsules split to reveal bright red fruits and black seeds. Attractive to bees, butterflies and birds. Medicinal tree used by Maori. 5-20cm available in Spring as a growing on line.

Long weeping branches. The bark remains white to the ground longer than the usual form. Tough vigorous pioneering species. Yellow autumn colour can be spoilt by birch rust in some seasons. Yields a hard white timber.

Himalaya to Japan. Broadly spreading, deciduous. Attractive layered foliage on branches tending to droop, turning yellow, pink or purple in autumn and giving off a strong gingerbread scent. Must have moist soils.
