Commercial release of a new hybrid 'Chiba' P. maximowiczii x fastigiate P. nigra (backcross). Developed by Allan Wilkinson, it has a narrow fastigiate form to replace the rust infected Lombardy poplar. 'Chiba' refers to Dr. Shigeru Chiba of the Japanese Oji Pulp & Paper Company which supplied the P. maximowiczii parent that is unpalatable to rabbits and possums. Leaves develop yellow autumn colour in May and remain rust free. Cuttings 40cm, Rooted topped @ 1m.

P. deltoides x yunnanensis. Broadly columnar, deciduous. Very vigorous. Not suitable for exposed sites due to large leaf size. Better in gullies & valley floors. Later yellow autumn colouring than other hybrid poplars. not very frost hardy. Widely used in western and northern regions, possum resistant. Timber density 360kg/m3, equal to P. radiata. P.deltoides x nigra. Upright crown and heavier stem for timber production. Smooth bark as a young tree, does well in wet sheltered valleys and on dry windy hillsides,. Rust resistant. Recommended for East of the North Island. Cuttings 40cm, Rooted topped @ 1m.

P. x euramericana. P. deltoides x P. nigra. Straight stemmed, narrow crowned, deciduous. Vigorous growth and tolerates dry hillsides and exposure Good conservation tree where minimal shade required. Prone to rust in high humidity & heavy dews, Yellow autumn display. Cuttings 40cm, Rooted topped @ 1m.
