Portuguese laurel Ht 8-12m
Broadly spreading, evergreen. Dark green shiny leaves 6-12cm long. Twigs red. Small white flowers on 25cm spreading racemes. Red to black cherries in Feb/Mar. Good screening tree and popular hedging plant. Cold hardy, tolerates lime.
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS: Handle promptly on arrival DO NOT let the roots dry out. If potting, press the potting medium firmly around each plant. Water after potting and regularly for 10 days. especially during dry windy weather. Put under shadecloth if possible. If planting in the open, really firm the soil around each plant using your heel, then water fairly regularly until established. HEDGE spacing 60-90cm

Coastal kowhai Ht 5-20m
Prmarily a coastal species, indigenous to the Northern half of the North Island, growing to 20m, one or more trunks, branches spreading to upright, no divaricating juvenile stage.
Leaves to 150mm long, 25-55 leaflets slightly overlapping and get smaller towards the tip, hairy, straight and appressed. Early flowering from July, up to 11 yellow flowers in a bunch.

Endemic to dry stoney Eastern South Island sites. A small dense bush to 2m tall, zig-zaggy branches 25mm long leaves, leaflets 4mm long, drooping orange-yellow flowers in spring, 5cm nobbly pods with hard brown to almost black seeds.
Juveniles & adults similar. Useful for bonsai.

Can grow to 25m usually a single trunk, branches weeping and spreading. Adult leaflets 30-50, not crowded or overlapping, of similar size, with an obvious petiolule, moderately to sparcely hairy, hairs straight and appressed. Leaves >30mm, leaflet pairs >6. Juveniles divaricating and interlacing branching. Can be deciduous in a cold climate. To 7 Yellow flowers in a bunch in Spring attract tuis and bellbirds, pigeons feed on the leaves.
